THE ARTIST

biography

After a mostly mystical childhood, he undertook (without much enthusiasm, it is true) general studies in mathematics, but on the side, escaped into artistic creation. He tried his hand at gouache and watercolor but did not find his true calling until much later. His journeys took him to agriculture, then to the building trades, passing through comic book drawing and bas-reliefs in stone.

He finally wound up in a type of sculpture that has always seemed obvious to him. “We live in a transitional epoch that makes and will make appear in our reality monstrous hybrid beings from mythology. Even the cows of the mountains are only milk machines.” Allying nature and technical civilisation, his mechanical-animals express the overlap between nature and man. They reflect the anxiety of monstrosity always possible, but give off a feeling of power that seems to be offered by modern technology.

He currently works in his workshop in the Loire Valley. His work is on display in galleries in Paris, Singapore, New-York, Miami, Hong-Kong, London, Geneva, Seoul, Monaco, Dubai, and Las Vegas as well as in the Shanghai Sculpture Space, but remains relatively unknown in France.

Philosophy of his work

“I wish I had been an artist… ”

Pierre Matter wanted to be an astrophysicist, but instead he became an artist!
Taking shortcuts through painting, comic books and bas-reliefs among other paths, he discovered a universe of metal.
And by hammering, welding and melting he expresses his vision of a world so special.

Between Jules Verne and Metropolis, Jodorowsky and Bilal, his fantastical creatures emerge into being.
Pieces of scrap metal to which he gives a second life, mixed with copper, stainless steel, brass and bronze, are transformed into bulls, whales, women or boats, always hybrid, almost possible.

Even his babies, not completely innocents, play in this imaginary world, where machines and technology become as one with the living.

This is the power of Pierre Matter: his sculptures seem so “natural” they almost make us forget all the cogs and pistons that make up his bestiary.

One almost expects to see them leave their moorings to melt into the crowd and find their partners…
